Fatal Head-on Collisions in Alabama

Gordo, AL - Injuries in Fatal Head-on Crash on US-82

The risk of a serious crash is present at almost any time. Alabama has a lot of long two-lane roads and highways with no medians or protections. If a driver veers across the centerline into oncoming traffic, they are at risk of crashing head-on with an oncoming motorist. These types of crashes are particularly devastating. Despite making up less than 2 percent of reported crashes nationwide, there were more than 10 percent of deadly crashes involving head-on impacts in the United States in a recent year. Thousands are killed in head-on crashes each year, and according to findings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), head-on crashes have a nearly 56 percent fatality rate.
